Plausibility and probability in deductive reasoning

چکیده

We consider the problem of rational uncertainty about unproven mathematical statements, which Gödel and others have remarked on. Using Bayesian-inspired arguments we build a normative model of fair bets under deductive uncertainty which draws from both probability and the theory of algorithms. We comment on connections to Zeilberger’s notion of “semi-rigorous proofs”, particularly that inherent subjectivity is an obstacle.

How many kinds of reasoning? Inference, probability, and natural language semantics

The "new paradigm" unifying deductive and inductive reasoning in a Bayesian framework (Oaksford & Chater, 2007; Over, 2009) has been claimed to be falsified by results which show sharp differences between reasoning about necessity vs. plausibility (Heit & Rotello, 2010; Rips, 2001; Rotello & Heit, 2009). We provide a probabilistic model of reasoning with modal expressions such as "necessary" an...

Interaction of reasoning ability and training intervention in reaction to training evaluation and post training effectiveness.

It has been shown that learners' abilities interact with the type of training intervention and effect on training and its outcomes. For this reason, the current research investigated the interaction of reasoning ability with two training methods, namely deductive and empirical methods, in effect on  reaction to training evaluation and post training effectiveness. This research was an applied an...

Deductive reasoning from uncertain conditionals.

This paper begins with a review of the literature on plausible reasoning with deductive arguments containing a conditional premise. There is concurring evidence that people presented with valid conditional arguments such as Modus Ponens and Modus Tollens generally do not endorse the conclusion, but rather find it uncertain, in case (1) the plausibility of the major conditional premise is debata...

On the plausibility transformation method for translating belief function models to probability models

In this paper, we propose the plausibility transformation method for translating Dempster-Shafer (D-S) belief function models to probability models, and describe some of its properties. There are many other transformation methods used in the literature for translating belief function models to probability models. We argue that the plausibility transformation method produces probability models t...
